Dress For Success

Thursday, July 20, 2017

I’ve made a couple of posts here on Kate Koutures discussing my struggle of being rejected for internships, but I don’t think I have ever updated y’all that I started a retail merchandising internship back in the end of June.  Everybody kept commenting that “another door” would open. While I like to think I’m an optimistic person, part of me did not believe them. I’m so grateful though that I didn’t give up. I absolutely love the company I am working for. The campus is just beautiful and so big. Part of me feels as if I’m working for the FBI because of the gated entry and my ID badge….hello adulting!

I’m lucky that the company’s dress code is not too strict. We’re able to wear jeans on a daily basis if wanted. I still like to “dress up” though. I find that when I do, I have this sort of confidence of “yeah, I know what I’m doing.” Dressing for the office though can be quite challenging though especially for the summer. For the most part, the weather is always hot, yet inside most of the building are air conditioned. I’m sure most of you have this problem as well.

I normally like to wear either a skirt or a dress. I find that it keeps me cool for when I have to step outside of the office. I tend to stay away from body con style ones. For one, they might be “a little distracting” in a professional atmosphere. But also, I find it’s not as breathable. Nothing is more uncomfortable than sweating through your clothes.

Blazers and light sweaters have been my best friends these past couple of weeks. Throwing one on turns any summer sundress into something that’s appropriate for the office. That’s probably my biggest tip if you’re wanting to look cute in the office!

Like I said, my dress code is pretty lenient, so I’m able to wear casual open toed shoes. So, if you’re in the same boat, invest in some “dressy” sandals. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. A tiny chunky heel or a strappy flat pair. Though I love to occasionally throw on a pair of wedges, sandals are my go to! They’re comfortable but ultimately, keep my feet from sweating lol.

I mentioned some tips for women, but what about for men!? I swear us women have it easier. Throw on a dress, and you’re instantly cool! If you’re a guy trying to find the perfect pant for the Summer, you should try wearing chinos. These lightweight pants are perfect for the office and meeting up with friends after work. To top it off, wear a lightweight button down. I have a softspot for gingham in fun summer colors. Every man looks handsome in one!

I’m curious what your tips for dressing professional in the summer are.
